You call you girlfriend to ask a question that only she can answer. When you call, you find out that she is crying super hardly. Are you going to forget about the question, and just walk her through her stress/problems? Or are you going to briefly ask her what's going on, and go directly to the question that you really want to know, and  after she answers you, tell her that she can keep crying？
